Remei launches joint sesame project with Weleda in Tanzania
Remei is developing a sesame project in Tanzania in collaboration with Weleda, the world market leader for certified natural cosmetics and anthroposophical medicines based in Arlesheim, Switzerland.
‘Alliances along the supply chain are key to positive development for smallholders in Tanzania. Sesame cultivation offers an important opportunity as an additional source of income alongside organic cotton,’ says Simon Hohmann, Co-CEO of Remei.
Since 1994, Remei has been investing in direct cooperation with organic cotton farmers in Tanzania. Remei works with the farmers in a cotton-based system in which crop rotation and alternative crops play a very important role in ensuring controlled organic farming, promoting biodiversity as well as economic development opportunities and resilience for farmers.
Since November 2024, under the management of Remei Tanzania Ltd. and in collaboration with interested farmers, sesame has been planted for the first time in 32 villages. The project is supported locally with regular training sessions for farmers.
Sesame has now been successfully harvested. Meaningful results from the pilot project are expected in summer 2025.
We are very much looking forward to this valuable partnership with Weleda.
