How it all began
In 1991, Patrick Hohmann, the founder of Remei, made a strange discovery. As a yarn and cotton trader, he happened to talk to a cotton farmer in India and wanted to know how much the man earnt. Hohmann learnt that, due to high expenditure for chemicals, the cost of cotton farming was higher than sales revenue. How come that people in agriculture were hardly making a living while, at the other end of the chain of production, there was no shortage of profit in the business of finished garments?
Questions like this one inspired Patrick Hohmann, the founder of Remei AG, to embark on completely new paths.
In the words of company founder Patrick Hohmann: “It’s just not on that a farmer in India should subsidise my t-shirt.”
The yarn and textile trading company Remei was founded in 1983. Already in 2002 the company received the “Award for Sustainable Development Partnerships” of the UNO together with Coop and has been developing continuously since then.
