Remei India samples individually harvested cotton plants to ensure GMO-free cultivation through professional seed multiplication
Establishing clean seed production is a long-term and complex process
Before the individually harvested cotton plants are cleaned and deseeded for seed production, Remei India tests the cotton for traces of GMOs in its own laboratory.
For seed production, Remei India grew cotton plants from seeds of different origins this season. More than 20000 cotton plants were harvested separately in November and each harvested plant was tested for GMO contamination based on tests in the company’s laboratory. Only the seed obtained from GMO-free plants can be used as the parent generation for professional seed multiplication at Remei India.
The dominance of genetically modified Bt cotton in India for many years has led to a drastic reduction in the availability of non-GMO seeds. In order to continue to promote and advance organic cotton cultivation in India, Remei India is forced to produce its own seeds in order to be able to supply the cooperating organic cotton smallholders with GMO-free seeds from its own multiplication every season.
