The organic cotton farmers who work with Remei Tanzania control pests with natural methods: molasses traps prove to be particularly effective

The molasses traps mainly attract the cotton moth and prevent it from laying its eggs in the cotton buds.

Another preventive measure is to plant sunflowers between the cotton plants. The sunflower attracts insect pests and thus keeps them away from the cotton plants.

In addition to preventive plant protection measures against pests, the organic cotton contract farmers cooperating with Remei also spray with natural plant protection products.

For pest control with organic pesticides, Remei Tanzania has purchased 240 new spray pumps for cooperating cotton farmers

The additionally purchased useful equipment can be borrowed by the farmers from the local Remei Tanzania offices in the villages in the cultivation area.

The organic pesticides for filling the pumps are also given locally at the village offices. Some of them are produced directly on site.

One example of an organic pesticide is a mixture of extracts from the neem tree, which is common in Tanzania, and the urine of cows. As a frassing poison, the neem tree extract unfolds its effect in the intestines of the insects.

Remei Tanzania works participatively with around 2,200 organic cotton farmers at the beginning of the Remei supply chain for organic cotton textiles in the Meatu and Maswa regions.
